What is the SAT, and why Do Italian Students Take it?

The SAT is the standardized college admissions test used by universities in the United States and by a growing number of institutions in Italy and across Europe. It is scored on a scale of 400–1600 and divided into two sections: Reading and Writing (800 points) and Math (800 points). Furthermore, since March 2023, the exam has been fully digital for international students. It is taken on a laptop or tablet using the official Bluebook application.

Students in Italy generally take the SAT for three main reasons. First, to access American universities, where the SAT remains a standard admissions credential for international applicants. Second, to access Italian universities themselves — Bocconi, LUISS, the Politecnico di Milano, the Università di Bologna, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore all accept the SAT for their English-taught international programs. Third, and increasingly common, is access to universities elsewhere in Europe. Specifically, institutions in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany are accepting the SAT more frequently as part of international admissions processes.

The SAT does not replace your academic record — it complements it. In a competitive admissions context, it therefore gives universities a standardized, internationally recognized benchmark alongside your grades and other application materials.

Which Italian Universities Accept the SAT?

Several major Italian universities accept the SAT for their international degree programs. Specifically, the five institutions EPIC students target most frequently are Bocconi, LUISS Guido Carli, the Politecnico di Milano, the Università di Bologna, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

Here is a quick overview of their minimum score thresholds:

UniversityMinimum SAT score
Università Bocconi~1400 (varies by program)
LUISS Guido Carli1200
Politecnico di Milano1240
Università di Bologna1200–1300+
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore560 per section (~1120 total)

These figures are based on each institution’s official admissions requirements. However, always verify the current requirements directly on the official admissions page of your target university, as thresholds can change each cycle.

For a full breakdown of what each of these universities looks for in an SAT score, read our complete guide: Italian Universities That Accept the SAT.

What SAT Score Do Students in Italy Typically Need?

The right target score depends entirely on where you are applying. As a general reference, a total score above 1300 is considered competitive for most international programs at Italian universities. However, for the most selective programs — particularly Bocconi and the Politecnico di Milano’s engineering degrees — you should be targeting 1400 or above.

For American universities, the range varies significantly by institution. The most selective universities — Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and Yale — admit students with scores typically between 1500 and 1580. In contrast, strong private and state universities such as Boston University, UCLA, and the University of Michigan are generally competitive in the 1200–1350 range.

Not all Italian universities treat the SAT the same way. Specifically, some require it, some recommend it, and some make it optional depending on the program. Therefore, understanding which model applies to your target university is the first step before setting a score goal. Our guide on SAT Mandatory, Test Optional & Test Blind explains exactly what each model means and how it should affect your strategy.

How Long Does SAT Preparation Take in Italy?

SAT preparation timelines in Italy vary significantly from student to student. In fact, the right duration depends on three variables — and getting them right from the start determines whether your preparation finishes on time with the score you need.

Your starting score and your target. A student beginning at 1050 targeting 1200 needs a very different plan than one who starts at the same score but is aiming for 1400+. Specifically, both the duration and the intensity of preparation will differ significantly.

Your exam date. If your target university has an application deadline, your exam date is not flexible. As a result, your preparation intensity has to adapt to that fixed point.

Your weekly availability. A student completing the IB or managing a heavy school schedule may spread preparation over 15 weeks with a lighter weekly commitment. In contrast, a student with a confirmed exam 5 weeks away may run an intensive program.

As a practical guide:

  • Standard preparation: 10–15 weeks, consistent weekly study
  • Intensive preparation: 4–6 weeks, higher weekly hours, targeted focus areas
  • Advanced students: 3–4 weeks of focused work on specific skills
  • Extended preparation: up to 15 weeks for students balancing IB, sports, or heavy school schedules

Therefore, EPIC Prep builds every study plan around the individual student’s profile rather than a fixed program. If you are unsure which timeline is realistic for your situation, contact our team for an initial assessment.

Where Can you Take the SAT in Italy?

The SAT is available at College Board-authorized test centers in Italy. Specifically, exam sessions follow the international College Board calendar, with dates typically available in:

August · September · October · November · December · March · May · June

Test centers in Italy include locations in Milan and Rome, among other cities. However, seats fill quickly. Therefore, College Board recommends registering as soon as the window opens, typically 3–5 months before the exam date.

To register, go directly to College Board. Always check the current list of authorized centers and available dates before booking, as availability changes each session.

How Does the Digital SAT Work, and What Do Students in Italy Need to Know?

The SAT has been fully digital for international students since March 2023. You take the exam on an approved laptop or tablet using the Bluebook application. You download and set it up before exam day. The test lasts approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes — about 45 minutes shorter than the previous paper version. For a full walkthrough of how to download and configure the application, read our guide: How to Use the SAT Bluebook App.

The Adaptive Format

The Digital SAT uses an adaptive format. Each section has two modules. The difficulty of the second module adjusts based on how you performed in the first. A strong performance in module one leads to harder questions in module two — but also to a higher maximum score ceiling. In other words, the strategy for module one is not simply “answer correctly” — it is “answer correctly and manage your time to position yourself for the harder, higher-value second module.” Guided preparation has a clear advantage here over self-study.

Reading and Writing

The Reading and Writing section tests your ability to work with academic texts under time pressure. Specifically, it covers interpreting arguments, identifying rhetorical structure, and correcting grammatical errors. Each question is based on a short passage, and the section moves quickly. For Italian students, academic English is often strong — however, applying it under strict exam conditions is a different challenge. This is where most time is lost.

Math and the Desmos Calculator

The Math section covers algebra, advanced math, problem solving, data analysis, trigonometry and geometry. The most significant change from the previous version is that the Desmos graphing calculator is now available throughout the entire Math section. This is a powerful tool — but only for students who know how to use it effectively. Most students either underuse it or lose time navigating it during the exam. Jaclyn Caruana, co-founder of EPIC Prep, is the author of Desmos SAT Hacks — a European guide dedicated to using Desmos strategically on the Digital SAT. Why Doesn’t the Italian School System Prepare Students for the SAT?

The Italian liceo — whether classico, scientifico, or linguistico — develops deep analytical thinking, content mastery, and strong written reasoning. However, it does not prepare students for standardized test formats.

The SAT rewards fast, precise pattern recognition under strict time pressure. It tests applied mathematical reasoning, academic English at pace, and a specific test-taking strategy. As a result, students underperform on their first SAT practice test or the exam itself.

This is not a weakness of the Italian school system. It is a structural difference between two different types of assessment. In practice, preparation needs to address both content and method simultaneously. That means not just what to know, but how to approach each question type within the constraints of the exam format.

The good news is that Italian liceo students bring many skills to the exam. Furthermore, once these skills are translated into SAT-specific problem-solving, they become a significant asset. The gap between a strong liceo student and a competitive SAT score is therefore almost always a question of format familiarity, strategic preparation, and building up knowledge of test content. That gap closes quickly with the right program.

How Do Students in Italy Improve their Scores with EPIC Prep?

EPIC Prep has been preparing students across Italy and Europe for the SAT since 2010. Moreover, 95% of students reach their target score. Score improvements vary significantly depending on the student’s starting point and timeline. However, the goal is always the same: the score your target university requires.

How EPIC Prep’s Approach Works

These results are built on four pillars. First, specialist tutors who are native speakers and university graduates from the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland. Second, proprietary materials developed and continuously updated based on current exam analysis. Third, a practice-driven approach where every session is built around exam-style exercises. Finally, performance data through Boost Your Prep that tracks each student’s progress at the skill level — so the plan adjusts as preparation evolves.

A Real Example

Carlotta, 18, started preparation with a score of 1080 — below the threshold for most programs on her list. Three months later she scored 1420, a 340-point improvement, and was admitted to Bocconi. Her preparation followed a personalized plan based on weekly sessions, error analysis, and guided practice with official exams.

What is Boost Your Prep, and Why Does it Matter for Students in Italy?

Boost Your Prep is EPIC Prep’s proprietary SAT preparation software. Furthermore, it is the only SAT prep software developed by a European company. It was built specifically around the Digital SAT format, with over 3,000 practice exercises, full-length timed exams, and a personalized performance dashboard that tracks progress at the skill level.

For students in Italy, Boost Your Prep solves a specific problem. Specifically, it bridges the gap between understanding a concept in a lesson and applying it correctly under timed exam conditions. Classroom instruction builds understanding. However, the SAT rewards automaticity — the ability to recognize a question type and execute the correct approach within seconds. That level of fluency only comes from volume of practice. In addition, it needs to be the right kind of practice: targeted, tracked, and adjusted as the student improves.

As a result, the platform enables students to work independently between sessions in a way that is calibrated to their individual profile. It delivers targeted practice on the exact skill areas where each student loses points — not generic content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does SAT Preparation Take in Italy?

Preparation time depends on three things: your target score, your availability, and your exam date. A student with a small score gap and 15 weeks available has a very different program than one targeting a 300-point improvement with 6 weeks to go. The right timeline is determined at the initial consultation based on your specific situation — not by a fixed program length.

Which Italian Universities Accept the SAT?

The five most common destinations for EPIC students are Bocconi, LUISS Guido Carli, Politecnico di Milano, Università di Bologna, and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Accepting the SAT does not always mean requiring it — some programs make it optional or use it alongside other criteria such as your school report or GPA. Always verify the current requirement directly on your target university’s official admissions page before making preparation decisions.

Where Can you Take the SAT in Italy?

At College Board-authorized test centers throughout Italy, including Milan and Rome, with sessions in August, September, October, November, December, March, May, and June.

Is the Digital SAT Accepted by Italian Universities?

Yes. All Italian universities that accept the SAT accept the current Digital SAT format, in place for international students since March 2023.

What SAT Score Do you Need for Bocconi?

Bocconi does not publish a fixed minimum, but competitive applicants typically present scores of 1400 or above.

Does the Italian School System Prepare Students for the SAT?

Not directly. The liceo develops strong analytical skills and subject knowledge, but the SAT requires a combination of skills and content that Italian schools do not fully cover: content topics that fall outside the standard liceo curriculum, academic English under strict time pressure, standardized test strategy, and the ability to perform consistently across a two-hour timed exam.  If you have questions about your SAT preparation, contact our team. We’ll assess your starting point, your target score, and your timeline, and build a plan around your situation.
