Is it Worth Taking the SAT if You Study in Europe?
Yes: taking the SAT is worthwhile if you study in Europe, and every year more and more European universities require it or value it in their admission processes, including institutions as demanding as Bocconi, ESADE or Cambridge.
For a European student with academic ambitions, a good SAT score can be the differentiating factor in a highly competitive application for admission.

What is the SAT and is it Still Relevant?
The SAT is a standardized test that assesses reading, writing and math skills, and remains one of the most widely used admissions criteria for universities around the world, including many in Europe. Although some U.S. universities have relaxed their requirements in recent years, the test remains a valid academic assessment tool, especially for competitive programs and scholarships.
For international students, the SAT functions as a common assessment framework that allows admissions committees to compare profiles of different nationalities on an equal footing. A strong score can compensate for differences between school systems, strengthen an application for admission, and increase the likelihood of obtaining financial aid or scholarships.
Can the SAT Help Me Get Into European Universities?
Yes: more than 25 European universities recognize the SAT in their admissions processes, distributed in countries such as Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Netherlands. Studying in Europe does not exclude the value of the test; on the contrary, more and more institutions are incorporating it as an objective criterion for evaluating international candidates with records from very different educational systems.
Having a separate test at each university can discourage applicants, forcing them to repeat similar tests over and over again. The SAT standardizes the process and facilitates admission to demanding programs without multiplying the student’s effort. For universities, it also represents a competitive advantage: it allows them to evaluate with clear and consistent criteria the international talent they wish to attract.
If you want to check if a particular college or university accepts the SAT, College Board offers an official official search engine for international universities that recognize the SATupdated directly by the agency responsible for the test.

What SAT Score Do I Need to Get Into the Best European Universities?
The most competitive European universities expect scores above 1400, although requirements vary significantly by institution and program. The table below lists the data for the top European universities that accept the SAT, with the distinction between the minimum required and the usual range of candidates admitted.
| University | Country | Usual competitive range |
|---|---|---|
| ESADE | Spain | ~1350 (average number of admitted students) |
| IE University | Spain | 1270-1460 |
| Saint Louis University – Madrid | Spain | ~1240-1270 |
| Bocconi University | Italy | 1400-1550 (varies by program) |
| LUISS Guido Carli (Rome) | Italy | 1200-1400+ |
| University of Bologna | Italy | 1200-1300+ |
| Catholic University of Sacro Cuore | Italy | 1200+ |
| University of Cambridge | United Kingdom | 1500+ |
| University of Oxford | United Kingdom | 1470-1480+ |
| Sciences Po | France | 1450+ (1500+ significantly increases the chances of an interview) |
| Erasmus University Rotterdam | Netherlands | 1200+ |
| Leiden University | The Netherlands | 1300+ |
Note: this data comes from the universities themselves and may vary by academic year and program. We recommend always checking with the host institution before applying.
It’s not enough to beat the minimum: at institutions like Bocconi, Cambridge or Sciences Po, the international candidates you’re competing with often have scores at the high end of the range. Preparing with the goal of reaching the highest possible percentile – not just the minimum threshold – is what makes the difference in a competitive application for admission.
How Does SAT Preparation Work With EPIC Prep From Europe?
EPIC Prep has been preparing European students to achieve high SAT scores since 2010, with 95% of students achieving their target score, a 99% satisfaction rate and an average improvement of 225 points in a 30-hour course. With four offices in Europe and a program designed specifically for those who have not studied under the U.S. system, EPIC Prep is the European benchmark in SAT preparation.
These results are supported by a proprietary methodology based on four pillars:
Specialized native English-speaking tutors, graduates from universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland, specifically trained in the EPIC Prep methodology. They are not generalist teachers: they are experts in this exam with years of experience working with European students.
Exclusive materials developed in-house and continually updated based on analysis of the latest tests, including proprietary Math, Reading and Grammar manuals written specifically for the SAT Digital. Students also have access to the Desmos SAT Hacks book, written by Jaclyn Caruana, co-founder of EPIC Prep, which covers in detail the use of the Desmos calculator in the math section – a tool that makes a real difference on test day.
A hands-on approach in which each session is built around exercises from the actual test format and each task is designed to develop exactly the skills the SAT tests, covering the three key sections: Reading, Reading and Writing, and Math.
Data analytics – through the tracking dashboard and Boost Your Prep software, the only SAT prep software developed by a European company – that allows you to monitor each student’s progress at the proficiency level and adjust the prep plan as the process progresses.
If you want to know in detail how the program is designed and what each phase includes, you can consult our SAT preparation course page.

How Long Does it Take to Prepare for the SAT In Europe?
SAT preparation from Europe usually requires between 10 and 15 weeks, although the exact time depends on each student’s starting point and the time available until the exam.
Student starting from scratch or on a standard basis: 10 to 15 weeks is the usual range. It is important not to extend the preparation beyond what is necessary: too long a preparation can have a negative effect on performance on the day of the exam.
Student with limited time available: if the weeks of dedication are limited, we recommend a minimum of 15 weeks with a reduced workload. Compressing the process too much does not produce the same results.
Near-term student: EPIC Prep can accompany students with 4 to 5 week windows when the situation requires it, with an intensive plan adapted to that window.
Student with advanced preparation: those who already have a solid base and have previously worked on the exam usually need 3 to 4 weeks of final exam-oriented preparation.
In terms of total time commitment, a complete preparation involves a minimum of 90 to 100 hours of classroom and independent student work – including homework, simulations and independent study. EPIC Prep offers an immediate start thanks to the number of tutors available, with ample time flexibility adapted to students in Europe, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
What Does the Boost Your Prep Software Include?
Boost Your Prep is the only SAT prep software developed by a European test prep company. Created by EPIC Prep specifically for SAT training, it goes far beyond a standard online platform: it offers resources that are not available anywhere else.
The development of Boost Your Prep required a thorough study of Bluebook, the official SAT Digital testing environment. That process gave the EPIC Prep team an in-depth understanding of the scoring algorithm and question design of the exam – knowledge that not only feeds the software, but also directly enriches the classes: tutors integrate these findings into their strategies, tips, and specific preparation for each question type.
Have European Students Gotten Into Good Universities Thanks to the SAT?
Yes: students in Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands prepared with EPIC Prep have gained access to universities such as Bocconi, ESADE and more. In many of these cases, the SAT was the deciding factor that made the difference compared to other applicants with similar academic records, but who did not perform as well on the test.
What distinguishes the success stories is not natural talent or luck – it is the right preparation, professional accompaniment and commitment during the process. If you want to understand what that path looks like in practice, you can read real case studies of students who prepared for the SAT with EPIC Prep and the factors that made a difference in their score.
