What Exams Do I Have To Take To Study In The USA?

Currently, many of the North American universities are at the forefront in the development of new technologies, scientific advances, social theories, and humanistic knowledge. Students from all over the world dream of being able to be admitted to universities in the USA. University admissions processes are long and very personal in the USA. In this article we are going to talk about the exams you will need to take to complete your admission process.

The SAT Exam

Did you know that in the United States many high school students start preparing for the SAT two or three years before applying to college? The reason is simple: the more you practice, the more likely you are to do better.

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test, formerly the Scholastic Aptitude Test) is the entrance exam that high school students in the United States take to enter college. To give us a better context, the SAT would be similar to the Spanish Selectividad Test (EBAU).

Now, why do universities require students to meet this requirement as part of the admissions process? American society is quite pluralistic in its educational systems, with public, private, charter, religious and homeschooling schools, etc. In addition to this, a good percentage of high school and college students in this country come from other countries with different academic systems. In this sense, the best way to evaluate the academic performance of one or the other is through an entrance test that measures the skills that a college candidate should have regardless of his or her previous education.

The SAT tests primarily two types of skills: language and mathematics. Each section of this test is evaluated with a score of 200 to 800 points, for a total score ranging between 400 to 1600 points.

The TOEFL iBT

Unlike the SAT, which is a test that is required of both local and international students, the TOEFL is a test strictly for international students who cannot demonstrate a previous academic background in English. In other words, if you are from Spain, but studied high school in England, you may not have to take the TOEFL. However, if you have completed all of your education in this country or another non-English speaking country, you should submit your TOEFL results to certify your level of English.

The TOEFL iBT is a test that measures your ability to read, listen, write and speak English. Because the test is designed for students, the content of the entire test will maintain an academic vibe. On our blog and website we have provided you with much more content on everything you need to know about the TOEFL.
