SAT Preparation in Rome: A Complete Guide for Students and Families

If you are looking for SAT preparation in Rome, EPIC Prep has been helping students in Italy reach their target scores since 2010. Rome has a growing concentration of students who need the SAT. Some attend international schools following IB, British, or American curricula. Others are in Italian liceo programs and targeting universities abroad — or selective Italian institutions where a competitive SAT score significantly strengthens an application, such as LUISS Guido Carli or Bocconi. However rigorous the Italian school system is, it does not prepare students for the SAT’s format, time pressure, or test-taking strategy.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know: why the SAT matters for students in Rome, which universities require it, how long preparation takes, and how to register for the exam in Italy.

Why is the SAT Relevant for Students in Rome?

Rome has a significant concentration of international schools following IB, British A-Level, and American High School Diploma curricula. Institutions such as Saint Stephen’s School, Marymount International School Rome, Notre Dame International School, and the American Overseas School of Rome all serve this student population. For many of them, SAT preparation is a standard part of applying to selective American and internationally competitive universities.

Beyond the international school community, Rome also has a large population of Italian liceo students. Many of them are increasingly looking beyond Italy’s public university system. For these students, the SAT offers direct access to universities around the world, and — crucially — to some of Italy’s most prestigious private institutions that require or strongly recommend it.

Furthermore, students from Rome face a preparation challenge specific to the Italian context. The liceo classico and liceo scientifico develop strong analytical depth and subject knowledge. However, neither prepares students for standardized testing. That gap requires deliberate, structured preparation.

Which Universities Accept or Require the SAT for Students in Rome?

Students in Rome who take the SAT typically apply to three categories of institutions: US universities, UK and European universities — including Italian institutions — and programs tied to merit-based scholarship offers.

American Universities

The vast majority of American universities accept the SAT. Moreover, it remains the standard admission test for international applicants at the most selective institutions. Ivy League universities such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, and Penn typically admit students with scores between 1500 and 1580. Highly selective non-Ivy institutions such as MIT, Stanford, NYU, and Georgetown fall in the same range. One tier below, strong private universities such as Boston University, Tulane, and University of Miami admit students with scores in the 1300 to 1450 range. Large state universities with strong international programs — UCLA, University of Michigan, University of Florida — are typically competitive from 1200 to 1350.

Italian and European Universities

For students in Rome, the most important local institution to note is LUISS Guido Carli University. It is one of Italy’s most prestigious private universities and it is located in Rome itself. LUISS sets a minimum SAT score of 1200 for both EU and non-EU students. In practice, competitive applicants typically present higher scores. This makes the SAT a direct entry requirement for one of the most sought-after universities in Rome — not just a credential for studying abroad.

Beyond LUISS, other Italian universities also accept the SAT. Bocconi University in Milan — a common aspiration for students in Rome— requires a minimum of approximately 1400, though this varies by program. Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore recommends a minimum of 560 per section, equivalent to approximately 1120 on the full test. Politecnico di Milano sets a minimum of 1240. The University of Bologna recommends scores in the 1200 to 1300 range or above.

Outside Italy, UK universities such as University College London, King’s College London, and the London School of Economics accept the SAT for international applicants. Furthermore, institutions in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany increasingly list the SAT as an accepted credential.

Always check the current SAT requirements directly on each university’s official admissions page before making preparation decisions. Requirements change each admissions cycle. It is also worth understanding that not all universities treat the SAT the same way — some require it, some make it optional, and some do not consider it at all. Our guide on  SAT mandatory, test-optional, and test-blind policies explains exactly what each model means and how it should affect your preparation strategy.

What is on the Digital SAT and What Do Students in Rome Need to Know About it?

The SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing (800 points) and Math (800 points), for a total of 1600. Since 2024, College Board moved the SAT fully digital worldwide. Students now take it on an approved device — a computer or tablet — using the Bluebook application. The exam is approximately 45 minutes shorter than the previous paper version, lasting 2 hours and 14 minutes in total.

The digital SAT also uses an adaptive format. The exam splits into two modules per section. The difficulty level of the second module adjusts based on the student’s performance in the first. A strong first module leads to harder questions in the second, but also to a higher scoring ceiling. Understanding this mechanic is one of the areas where guided preparation has a measurable advantage over self-study. EPIC Prep builds adaptive format strategy into every preparation program from day one. If you want to understand the full picture of how the digital SAT works, we have written a detailed guide on the new digital SAT that is worth reading before you start your preparation.

The most significant change for students is that the Desmos graphing calculator is now available throughout the entire Math section. However, knowing how to use Desmos effectively is not automatic. It is a powerful tool, but only for students who understand how to apply it strategically to the specific question types the SAT uses. Without proper guidance, most students either underuse it or lose time trying to figure it out during the exam. You can read our complete SAT calculator guide to understand approved devices, Desmos strategy, and what to avoid on test day.

Jaclyn Caruana, co-founder of EPIC Prep, wrote Desmos SAT Hacks specifically to address this gap. It is the only European guide dedicated to strategic Desmos use in the digital SAT.

How Long Does SAT Preparation in Rome Take?

At EPIC Prep, the recommended preparation period for most students is between 10 and 15 weeks. This focused, structured program delivers meaningful score improvement by building a plan around each student’s specific weaknesses from day one.

That said, EPIC Prep adapts to each student’s situation. For students with a confirmed university application deadline, a student can complete a focused preparation program in as little as 4 to 5 weeks. This concentrates effort on the highest-yield areas. For students who are already at an advanced level, a program of 3 to 4 weeks is often sufficient.

At the other end, some students have particularly demanding schedules — those in the IB program, students with heavy extracurricular commitments, or those managing competitive academic pressure alongside preparation. For them, EPIC Prep offers a reduced workload format over up to 15 weeks. This allows preparation to run in parallel with a full schedule without adding excessive pressure.

We determine the right timeline at the initial consultation, based on the student’s target exam date, diagnostic score, and university requirements.

Is the Italian Liceo System Good Preparation for the SAT?

The Italian liceo — whether classico, scientifico, or linguistico — develops strong analytical depth and subject knowledge. However, it does not prepare students for the specific demands of standardized testing.

The SAT tests  concepts in ways that are deliberately unfamiliar. It frames them within complex word problems and multi-step reasoning. It also rewards a very specific problem-solving approach that goes well beyond what the Italian curriculum teaches. The Italian education system rewards thorough, structured written answers. The SAT rewards fast, precise pattern recognition. EPIC Prep addresses that shift in approach from day one of every preparation program.

Does Studying in Italian Help with the SAT Reading and Writing Section?

Studying in Italian builds strong academic discipline, but it does not prepare students for the SAT Reading and Writing section. This section tests academic English — specifically, the kind of formal, evidence-based prose found in university-level texts.

Students from Italian-medium schools often find the vocabulary register more demanding than expected. The sentence complexity of SAT Reading passages adds to that challenge — even for students with strong general English from international exposure or private study.

Why is Standardized Test Strategy a Separate Skill From Academic Ability?

A student with excellent academic performance in the liceo or IB can still underperform on the SAT without specific preparation. The reason is simple. The SAT rewards a very specific set of test-taking techniques that school curricula never teach. Students must practice them deliberately with proper guidance — they do not transfer automatically from classroom performance.

How Does EPIC Prep Adapt SAT Preparation to Each Student’s Schedule?

No two students begin SAT preparation with the same available time. EPIC Prep builds its model around that reality. Rather than fitting every student into a fixed program, EPIC Prep builds each preparation plan around three variables. First, the student’s target exam date. Second, their diagnostic score. Third, the number of hours per week the student can realistically dedicate to preparation.

Regardless of the timeline, all EPIC programs require a meaningful commitment of independent study between sessions. A full SAT preparation with EPIC involves a minimum of 90 to 100 hours of combined lesson time and independent work. This includes practice exercises, full-length timed tests, and review. This is what makes meaningful score improvement possible in a significantly shorter time than traditional preparation methods.

Why Prepare for the SAT With EPIC Prep in Rome?

EPIC Prep has been preparing students in Italy and throughout Europe since 2010. Three elements set it apart.

Exclusive software. EPIC Prep developed proprietary software dedicated exclusively to SAT preparation, making it the first European institution to invest in this level of innovation. Boost Your Prep goes far beyond a standard online platform. It offers students a constantly expanding bank of practice exercises and more full-length tests than College Board officially publishes. Advanced analytics track progress in detail and provide clear reporting.

Building this software required extensive study of Bluebook, the official SAT testing environment. As a result, the EPIC team gained deep insight into its scoring algorithm and question design. That expertise enriches instruction directly — teachers integrate these findings into strategies, tips, and targeted preparation.

Personalized tutoring. Many SAT preparation programs focus primarily on group instruction. EPIC Prep emphasizes individual tutoring instead. A wide team of expert tutors delivers a highly personalized experience to students who prefer one-on-one guidance. EPIC also offers group courses, but intentionally keeps them very small to maintain the same standard of excellence. Whether students choose individual sessions or small groups, the focus on personal progress remains at the highest level.

A dedicated SAT team. EPIC Prep dedicates an entire team exclusively to SAT preparation. The team reflects this focus in an active YouTube channel where they share strategies and insights regularly. They also continuously publish and improve proprietary manuals and develop Boost Your Prep further. A team fully committed to evolving every aspect of the SAT experience ensures that courses stay at the cutting edge of preparation.
