How to Use Desmos on the SAT: A Guide from the Author of Desmos SAT Hacks

Desmos is the built-in graphing calculator on every Digital SAT Math section — and knowing how to use it strategically is one of the fastest ways to improve your score.

This guide, written by EPIC Prep co-founder Jaclyn Caruana and author of Desmos SAT Hacks, covers the question types where Desmos gives you a real advantage, the mistakes most students make, and how to train with it correctly before exam day.

What Is Desmos and Why Did College Board Build It into the SAT?

Desmos is a browser-based graphing calculator. College Board integrated it directly into Bluebook — the official Digital SAT testing platform — when the exam went fully digital. It is built into the exam interface. Every student has access to it throughout the entire Math section. Unlike a standard calculator, Desmos can graph functions, plot multiple equations simultaneously, identify intersection points, and display results visually in real time. College Board made that decision deliberately. The Digital SAT rewards students who think strategically about which tool to use and when. Which SAT Math Questions Should You Use Desmos For?

Desmos gives you a real advantage on a wide range of SAT Math questions — most notably systems of equations, quadratic functions, intersections of two functions, and verifying algebraic work. These four are among the most common examples, and a strong place to start; the full methodology, including different question types and decision rules, are covered in Desmos SAT Hacks

Here’s why each of these four matters and what the time saving actually looks like:

Systems of equations. Questions that ask for the solution to a system of two equations — the x and y values where both equations are satisfied simultaneously — can be solved in under 30 seconds with Desmos. You enter both equations, graph them, and read the intersection point directly. The same problem solved algebraically through substitution or elimination takes two to three minutes and introduces multiple opportunities for arithmetic errors.

Quadratic functions and parabolas. These are among the most time-consuming SAT questions when solved by hand. Completing the square or applying the quadratic formula under timed conditions is slow and error-prone. In Desmos, you graph the function and read the values directly from the visual output in seconds.

Intersections of two functions. The SAT regularly asks for the x-value where f(x) = g(x). This question type calls for a graphical solution. You enter both functions into Desmos and click the intersection point. The answer appears immediately — no algebra required.

Verification of algebraic work. On complex multi-step problems, Desmos works as a powerful checking tool. You graph both sides of your equation as separate functions and confirm visually that your solution is correct. This takes ten seconds and eliminates the risk of submitting a calculation error on a problem you actually understood.

These are just four of the many ways Desmos can change how you approach SAT Math. Students who learn to apply them consistently recover significant time across the Math section — time that can be redirected to the problems that need it most. The full methodology, covering every question type and decision rule, is what Jaclyn’s book Desmos SAT Hacks was written to teach.

Why Do Most Students Leave Those Points on the Table?

Most students who underperform with Desmos share one problem. They have never practiced with it deliberately before exam day. They open it during a practice test, experiment with inputs they do not know, lose time, and conclude it is not worth using. That conclusion is exactly backwards.

Desmos is not intuitive under timed conditions unless you have trained with it specifically. You need to know which question types call for it, which functions to enter, and how to read the output quickly. A student who discovers Desmos on test day is not using a tool. They are troubleshooting software while the clock runs.

At EPIC Prep, Desmos is part of Math instruction from the start. Tutors share specific techniques, demonstrate them on real SAT questions, and have students practice between lessons.  By the time students take a full-length SAT practice test inside Bluebook, Desmos is already familiar — so practice time is spent applying it under exam conditions, not learning it for the first time.

Is Desmos Useful for Every SAT Math Question?

No — and knowing when not to use Desmos is just as important as knowing when to use it. For straightforward arithmetic, percentage calculations, or algebra that resolves in one step, Desmos adds no value. It costs time. The students who benefit most are those who quickly identify which question types warrant opening the calculator and which do not. That judgment develops through deliberate practice.

For broader SAT Math strategy beyond the calculator, our guide on how to improve your SAT score covers the full picture of what drives score gains.

How Do You Access Desmos Inside Bluebook?

Desmos is available directly inside Bluebook during the entire Math section. You do not need to download anything separately or set it up before the exam. A calculator icon appears in the top right corner of the screen once you enter the Math section. Clicking it opens Desmos in a panel alongside the question. You can resize the panel, zoom in and out, and move between questions without losing what you have entered.

One important detail: Desmos does not save your work between questions. Every time you open it on a new question, you start with a blank interface. Speed matters. Students who have practiced entering equations quickly have a real advantage over those figuring out the interface in real time.

How Does EPIC Prep Teach Desmos?

At EPIC Prep, Desmos is not an afterthought. It is part of SAT Math preparation from the first session. Every student begins with a diagnostic assessment. It establishes their current Math level, identifies their weakest question types, and measures how comfortable they are with the Digital SAT interface.

From that baseline, tutors build a preparation plan that includes explicit Desmos training alongside core Math content. Students learn not just how to solve the problem, but which tool to reach for and when. EPIC’s proprietary software, Boost Your Prep, is built specifically for the Digital SAT. It includes Desmos-compatible practice exercises that replicate the exact question types and interface students will encounter on exam day.

By the time an EPIC student takes the real exam, Desmos is not a variable. It is an advantage they have already practiced hundreds of times. To learn more about how our courses work, visit our SAT courses page and get in touch with our team directly.

Want to Learn More About Desmos?

For students who want the complete Desmos methodology — every question type, every function, every decision rule — Jaclyn’s book Desmos SAT Hacks covers it in full. Most SAT prep books are static. You read the explanation, you look at the diagram, you trust that it works. SAT Desmos Hacks is built differently. Every one of the 57 problems in the book is paired with a live practice page at desmos.prepdrills.com, where students work through the exact problem with the real Desmos calculator embedded directly on the page. The companion site is included with every purchase of the book.

This matters because Desmos is a tool, and tools have to be used to be learned. Reading about which buttons to press is not the same as pressing them. By the time a student finishes the book, they have not just read 57 strategies — they have executed each one inside the same calculator interface they will see on test day. That is what makes the difference between knowing Desmos exists and using it under timed pressure.
