Why Do Students in Amsterdam Take the GRE?
Amsterdam is one of Europe's most internationally oriented cities for graduate study, and the GRE plays a more direct role here than in most European markets. Unlike many continental systems where standardized tests are optional add-ons, several of Amsterdam's leading programs use the GRE as a required selection criterion for international applicants — with published quantitative benchmarks that candidates must meet. That makes the GRE not just a useful credential, but a gatekeeper.
A single GRE result covers economics, business analytics, data science and MBA programs within Amsterdam, while also reaching INSEAD, London Business School, IESE, HEC Paris, the University of St. Gallen and SDA Bocconi for candidates considering international applications alongside their Dutch ones.
Which Amsterdam Universities Require or Accept the GRE?
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) requires the GRE General Test for international applicants to its MSc Economics, MSc Business Economics and MSc Data Science and Business Analytics programs. The requirement is specific: a minimum Quantitative Reasoning score of 155, with 158 or above considered competitive. Both the Verbal and Quantitative sections are evaluated, and the GRE institution code for UvA's School of Economics is 7878. UvA also accepts the GMAT as an alternative, but the GRE is the primary test listed in admissions requirements.
Amsterdam Business School (ABS), which operates within UvA, accepts both the GRE and the GMAT for its Amsterdam MBA and MBA in Finance programs. GRE scores are converted to a GMAT equivalent for evaluation. The suggested minimum GMAT Focus score for the Amsterdam MBA is 565, with an average among admitted students of 625. For the MBA in Finance, the suggested minimum is higher: GMAT Focus 585, with an average of 625.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) uses the GRE and GMAT in a different way. For the MSc Business Administration, no test is required. However, for pre-master programs at VU's School of Business and Economics, applicants who do not meet standard admission requirements can remedy deficiencies by submitting a competitive GRE score. For MSc Economics, transfer students must take the GRE.
Where Does the GRE Take You Beyond the Netherlands?
The Netherlands has one of Europe's most internationally mobile graduate populations — Dutch universities actively encourage students to apply abroad, and many candidates in Amsterdam submit applications to multiple countries in the same cycle. A GRE score earned in Amsterdam is valid at INSEAD, LSE, London Business School, IE, IESE, HEC Paris, the University of St. Gallen, SDA Bocconi and thousands of other programs worldwide, which means one exam and one preparation cycle can support a Dutch application, a European MBA application and a US or UK research program application simultaneously.
Why Prepare for the GRE With EPIC Prep in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam's graduate programs are not vague about what they expect. UvA's School of Economics publishes a quantitative minimum of 155 and a competitive target of 158 — and your application is evaluated against those numbers. A general sense that you are good at math is not the same as performing at the 158 level under GRE conditions, on GRE question types, within GRE time constraints. That specific gap is what structured preparation closes.
Because UvA publishes exact score thresholds — 155 minimum, 158 competitive — preparation in Amsterdam is not about general improvement. It is about hitting a specific number. That changes how a course should be designed: your tutor needs to know where you stand relative to the desired score, which question types are keeping you below it, and what the fastest path to closing the gap looks like. A generalist tutor or a self-study plan rarely works with that precision, because neither is built around the test's internal logic.
EPIC Prep's GRE team works exclusively on this exam — they are not general English teachers. That specialization is what makes the difference when the target is narrow and the stakes are high. Your tutor stays with you from diagnosis to your course finish day: tracking every session through PrepDrills, adjusting the plan as your scores on practice sets evolve, and making sure the areas that matter most for your target program get the time they need. Sessions are scheduled around your availability — compatible with a full-time role in Amsterdam, a master's at UvA or VU, or both.
EPIC Prep Amsterdam is an academy that specializes in the GRE. Every course starts with a diagnostic assessment — your starting level, your target score and your exam date — before we design your plan around expert tutors, exclusive materials and the EPIC Prep Methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions About the GRE Course in Amsterdam
Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions that students and applicants in Amsterdam often ask about the GRE.
These frequently asked questions address key issues such as admission requirements for schools in the Netherlands, the differences between the GRE and GMAT, the structure of the GRE General Test, the scoring system, score validity of scores, retake policies, testing arrangements at authorized test centers and from home, as well as strategic considerations for effective preparation.
What GRE Score Do I Need for the University of Amsterdam?
The University of Amsterdam requires international applicants to its MSc Economics, MSc Business Economics and MSc Data Science and Business Analytics programs to submit a GRE General Test result with a minimum Quantitative Reasoning score of 155, though 158 or above is considered competitive. All sections of the exam must be completed. The GRE institution code for UvA’s School of Economics is 7878.
Does Amsterdam Business School Accept the GRE?
Yes. Amsterdam Business School accepts the GRE for both the Amsterdam MBA and the MBA in Finance. GRE scores are converted to a GMAT equivalent for evaluation. The suggested minimum GMAT Focus score for the Amsterdam MBA is 565, with an average among admitted students of 625. ABS also offers an analytical in-house test as an alternative for candidates who do not submit a GMAT or GRE.
Is the GRE Required for Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam?
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam does not require the GRE for its MSc Business Administration. However, applicants to VU’s pre-master programs in Business and Economics who do not meet standard admission requirements can submit a GMAT score of 525 or higher, or an equivalent GRE score, to remedy deficiencies. For the MSc Economics, HBO transfer students must pass the GRE as part of the admission process.
Where Can I Take the GRE in Amsterdam?
The GRE General Test is available at ETS-authorized test centers in Amsterdam and at home. Amsterdam has Prometric and Pearson VUE testing locations where the GRE is administered year-round. The at-home option is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and uses the same content, format and scoring as the test-center version.
Can I Use the GRE Instead of the GMAT for Programs in Amsterdam?
Yes — in most cases. UvA’s School of Economics lists the GRE as the primary test and accepts the GMAT as an alternative. Amsterdam Business School accepts both and converts GRE scores to GMAT equivalents. VU Amsterdam accepts either for pre-master programs.
How Long Does It Take to Prepare for the GRE in Amsterdam?
In Amsterdam, most students need 10 to 15 weeks of structured preparation to reach a competitive GRE score. Candidates with a tight deadline can work through an intensive plan in 5 to 7 weeks. Students who are already advanced in their preparation may need only 3 to 5 weeks of focused, intensive work. With our course at EPIC Prep in Amsterdam, we design each course individually around the student’s starting level, target score and exam date.
