How much do I have to study for the GED?
If you are considering obtaining your GED, it is important to remember that it is equivalent to a high school diploma in the United States. In other words, if you pass all 4 GED tests, you will obtain a certification that carries the same weight as 4 years of academic preparation. Once this premise is understood, it is easier to answer the question posed in this article. In this article we explain the workload you will have aka what you will have to study to pass the GED.
Table of Contents
Mathematics Test
The GED math test assesses knowledge of:
- Basic Mathematics (operations with fractions, multiples, operations with exponents, whole numbers and decimals, …)
- Geometry
- Basic algebra
- Graphics and functions
To prepare this section will depend on your initial knowledge and math skills. In EPIC we distinguish between students who have taken a math class more or less than 12 months ago. Typically, the difference between these two types of candidates is 2 to 1. In other words, a student who has not been exposed to mathematics for more than 12 months usually requires, on average, 2 times the number of hours needed by a student who is still mathematically active. In cases where the candidate has an intermediate level of mathematics, the EPIC methodology usually requires a minimum of 10 to 12 hours of individual classes, as long as he/she completes all the additional materials provided by his/her teacher.
Science Examination
The GED science test assesses knowledge of:
- Physics and chemistry, biology and geology
- Comprehension of texts related to science
To study for the GED science test you will need to review knowledge of physics and chemistry, biology and geology. Remember that the exam is in English, so if you studied these concepts in Spanish, you will need a re-adaptation process. Your performance on this exam will depend on your ability to analyze scientific texts in English. The amount of time you will need to study for the GED science test will depend on 2 variables: your scientific knowledge and your level of English. At EPIC, intermediate/high level students are able to take this exam after a minimum of 10 to 12 hours of specialized classes, as long as they complement the classes with practice and study advised by the tutor.

Social Science Examination
The GED social studies test assesses knowledge of:
- U.S. society and government.
- U.S. History.
- Economy
- World geography
- Statistics applied to social sciences
The social sciences exam has a particularly broad agenda. Most candidates, unless they have studied under the American system, are totally unfamiliar with much of the knowledge tested. This is an exam in which you will have to study quite a few hours to perform at a good level. The minimum preparation required should not be less than 10 hours of class, since the teacher will have to validate your theoretical and practical evolution. It is very common that, due to the breadth of the syllabus, if you do not have the help of specialists, you may need a much greater study load.
Examam of Language Arts
The GED Language Arts test tests your knowledge of:
- Grammar
- Written expression skills
- Reading comprehension
Of all the GED tests, this is, without a doubt, the one that will depend the most on your level of English. GED study hours for this test are highly variable depending on the candidate. It is true that, if you have a minimum level close to the First Certificate, our teachers obtain very positive results with a minimum class load of 10 hours. As with the other parts of the GED, these classroom hours will need to be accompanied by individual study and, above all, lots of practice of content specially designed to improve your performance on this test.
