TOEFL iBT
In the area of business and project management of almost any kind, speaking English is a fundamental tool. We live in an interconnected world in which it is increasingly common to have to interact or negotiate with people of other nationalities located in different parts of the world. For this reason, if you want to study at a good business school it is important to keep in mind that they will ask for your TOEFL iBT scores.
Moreover, many business schools not only ask for TOEFL scores, but also recommend that the future candidate obtain a minimum score of 100 points in this exam. Such is the case at the following universities:
- Harvard Business School (Boston, USA).
- Stanford Business School (Stanford, USA)
- The University of Chicago Booth School of Business (Chicago, USA)
- INSEAD Business School (Fointaneblue, France)
- IESE Business School (Barcelona, Spain)
- Bocconi University (Milan, Italy)
The list is even longer. The business programs that maintain the most international recognition both inside and outside the United States are programs that recruit talent from around the world, so the programs are taught entirely in English. Therefore, the more recognized the program, the more rigorous the scrutiny process on whether the prospective candidate is able to interact fluently in English. Knowing this, a high TOEFL score is going to help you excel in the admissions process, even at those universities where TOEFL is not a mandatory requirement.
If you already know which U.S. or European university you want to apply to, we recommend that you check the “Test requirements” or “English proficiency” section to see if you have to submit your TOEFL scores, as well as what score the institution recommends.

GMAT Exam
Just as the TOEFL iBT works as a tool to certify your level of English, another test required by most business programs is the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).
The GMAT is an exam developed by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) with the purpose of having a tool that could assess the skills that any candidate aspiring to enter an MBA program anywhere in the world should have. The GMAT is a test of just over 3 hours that evaluates the following 4 skills:
In other words, the exam will seek to evaluate your verbal skills, logical-mathematical reasoning, and your ability to express yourself in written form. Getting a high score on this test can help you stand out, even if your high school or college scores were not so good. The GMAT carries a lot of weight in the applicant selection process at top schools.
The total score on this test ranges from 200 to 800 points. However, the first two sections (AWA and IR) are evaluated under a different scoring system. In the case of Analytical Writing Assessment you will receive a score from 0 to 6 points for your essay. In the case of Integrated Reasoning the score will be from 0 to 8 points.
Another important point of this test, which you will not find in the TOEFL, is that the test is adaptive. This means that the more questions you get right, the higher the difficulty level will increase. So, if you find that the test is getting more and more difficult, it may be a sign that you are doing well!
On the official GMAC website you will find much more relevant information about this exam. To register for this test, you can do so through the MBA portal.
