How to prepare for the TOEFL?

The TOEFL is an exam that tests the candidate’s level of English in an academic environment and that makes it a complex exam. There are multiple guides, apps, encapsulated trainings, low-cost courses, etc.

Can I take the TOEFL online?

The TOEFL has several versions. If you are preparing to apply to a university for a degree, a master’s degree, an exchange program or a doctorate the TOEFL version you need to take is the TOEFL iBT either at an authorized center or the TOEFL iBT home edition

In both cases, you will take the TOEFL online, the only difference between the two exams is the location where the test is taken.

Where do I register for the TOEFL iBT test?

Your TOEFL registration starts by creating an account on the ETS website (the company that manages the TOEFL) and follow all the required steps.

Once you have registered, remember that ETS allows you to cancel or reschedule your test day, no matter what your reason is. Unfortunately, booking changes have an additional cost. However, in the event that you need to cancel, you will receive a refund of only 50% of the fee as long as you give 4 days’ notice of cancellation. So, unless you have an unforeseen event or an emergency, try to take the TOEFL test on your original scheduled test day.

What is the price of the TOEFL and how many times can I take it?

Currently the TOEFL iBT has a price of $255 dollars if you want to take it in an authorized center in Spain. This price may vary if you take it in another country.

How long does it take to prepare for the TOEFL?

From the time you register on the website until you prepare for the test, these are the usual deadlines:

  • It takes, on average, a maximum of between 10 and 14 days to have an available TOEFL exam date to take the test. This period depends on whether the candidate takes the TOEFL iBT at an authorized center or takes the TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
 
  • The length of the TOEFL courses will depend on the student’s initial level, but intensive TOEFL courses usually take at least 3 weeks to prepare.

Why TOEFL and not IELTS, First Certificate, Advanced or DET?

The TOEFL is the world leader in the validation of the academic level of English due to its agility, speed, amount of preparation materials, and accessibility to the exam. That being said, and as a general rule, if you need immediacy to get your score, you should focus on the TOEFL, IELTS or DET and discard other types of exams. Among these 3 the DET is the least accepted of all of them.

What is considered a good TOEFL score?

The TOEFL exam is neither pass nor fail. Your score ranges from 0 to 120 points. Your target score will depend on what the institution you want to apply to asks for. Find out what TOEFL score they ask for before you begin your preparation and, if you apply to several schools, always take as a reference the one that asks for the highest score.

What accommodations does ETS provide if I have a disability or learning disability?

ETS makes accommodations for people with disabilities and/or learning deficits. However, it is important that you notify the organization of your needs well in advance. ETS can take up to 6 weeks to review your case and make the necessary accommodations.

Does the TOEFL certificate expire?

The ETS website makes it very clear that TOEFL certificate scores are valid for 2 years.

What is ETS TOEFL?

ETS es an american company that owns the TOEFL exam. They are also the owners of the GRE, Praxis, TOEIC and Hiset. The registrations and all the interactions you will have with TOEFL take place in their website.

How is the TOEFL iBT structured?

The TOEFL ibt is structured into 4 sections:

  • TOEFL Reading: the TOEFL reading section consists of 3 texts of 700 words, which are accompanied by 10 questions. The total time to complete this section is 52 minutes. In some cases, an additional 4th reading is included, for which an extra 18 minutes are given.
  • TOEFL Listening: this TOEFL section consists of listening to audios on topics of an academic nature or conversations between university students. The former will be accompanied by 6 questions, while the conversations will consist of 5 questions. As in the previous section, the Listening time can vary from 41 to 55 minutes depending on the number of audios you have to listen to on the day of your exam.
  • TOEFL Speaking: this TOEFL section consists of 4 questions that you will have to answer orally. The time to give your answer will be from 45 to 60 seconds, depending on the type of question. In this section you will be evaluated on your ability to present your own ideas, as well as to synthesize information from other materials. The time to complete this section is 17 minutes. You speak to the computer (not to a human being) and your responses are recorded.
  • TOEFL Writing: This TOEFL section consists of two questions, in which you will be asked to answer in the form of an essay. One of the questions will ask you to state your opinion on a topic, while the other will ask you to synthesize information from the content presented to you that day. The time you will have to complete this section will be 50 minutes.

Each section is scored individually on a range of 0 to 30 points and carries the same weight on the final TOEFL score which, in turn, ranges from 0 to 120 points.
