UNDERSTANDING GED SCORES

The GED diploma consists of 4 tests. Each of the tests is individually assessed and you have to pass all of them in order to have a GED qualification. In this article we explain how the GED tests are scored and when you will have your scores.

Table of Contents

Passing The GED

The GED test is given as a pass with a score of 145 points. This is a worldwide standard. On some websites, they state that in the state of New Jersey you need a minimum score of 150 points to pass each exam. If you take the GED in Spain you need 145 points to pass. The GED candidate who wants to study college in the U.S., should know that the GED in addition to having a pass or fail section has 2 additional score levels:

GED College Ready

The score range known as College Ready is between 165 and 174 points. A GED College Ready score means that the candidate is ready to start college courses and will allow him/her to access college credits without having to take previous access courses.

GED College Ready + Credit

The score range between 175 and 200 points is known as GED College Ready + Credit. A GED College Ready + Credit score determines that the candidate has knowledge that is taught in higher courses so he or she may be eligible for college credit. Depending on the college you apply to a GED College Ready + Credit score may carry:

    – 3 credits in a math subject
    – 3 credits in a social science subject
    – 3 credits in a science course
    – 1 credit in a humanities course

For the GED College Ready and GED College Ready + Credit grade brackets, the candidate must send a transcript of his or her grades to the college or university to which he or she wishes to apply. The admissions offices of each college will be in charge of validating whether or not the college will accept the credits you request for your GED scores. If your GED score exceeds 165 points, contact the admissions office and they will instruct you on the steps to follow.

Publication of GED scores

The deadline for GED scores to be posted is 24 hours. However, it is very common that within a few hours of completing one of the tests you will have your GED score. To find out if you have your score available you can check your email or log in to your GED account.
