THE 10 RULES TO COMPLETE THE DET WITHOUT PROBLEMS

In this article, we have prepared a summary of all the rules you need to know in order to take the Duolingo English Test (DET) and have your score certified. The DET is an exam that is taken online from any location and, for this reason, they are quite strict in complying with certain rules. Here are the most significant ones:

1. The DET is done with your desktop application

All DET exams must be completed with your desktop application. In other words, in order to take the Duolingo exam you must download the desktop app. The reason why Duolingo chooses this option is because it provides more stability and security while taking the test.

2. You will need a computer with a microphone, speakers and camera

The camera should be located at the top of your monitor and, together with the microphone, should be kept connected during the whole test.

3. Keep your eyes on the screen at all times

The examination is done under constant supervision. Any hint of outside help will invalidate your exam. Keep your eyes on the screen at all times to avoid suspicion. Do not go into paranoia mode if you need to look at the keyboard as this is authorized behavior.

4. Close any programs, browsers, apps running on your computer

Before starting the DET exam make sure there is nothing except the Duolingo application open on your desktop. If in doubt, restart and shut down all other programs. Finally, remember that all predictive typing systems are prohibited.

5. Use official identification on the day of the exam

You will need to verify that whoever is in front of the camera is the same person who has the date and time to take the DET. Use official photo IDs that clearly validate your identity.

6. Good light and no noise

Make sure that the room you are in is well lit and there are no noises that might incite suspicion of outside help.

7. Keep your ears in sight

Show your ears at all times. The use of headphones of any kind is not permitted during the DET exam. The only context in which you may not show your ears is when wearing religious attire, for which you must request prior authorization.

8. Keep your phone in another room

The slightest consultation of any mobile device invalidates your DET test. Remember that it will only take you 1 hour to complete your test so don’t take the risk: leave your cell phone and tablet in another room.

9. Don’t have anything to write down

It is forbidden to take notes so, as with the previous point, leave all your papers in another room.

10. Disconnect any additional monitors

Remember that you are being monitored at all times. If you work with more than one screen, remember to disconnect them before starting your exam as this will disqualify and directly invalidate your exam.

Remember that if you break one of these 10 rules, it is very likely that your grade will not be certified and, depending on the seriousness of the infraction, it can lead to the invalidation of previously taken exams and even a lifetime disqualification.
