How to Know Duolingo Level Equivalences?
The Duolingo English Test (DET) validation test has gained a lot of popularity in recent years. More and more academic centers are accepting their results in their admission processes. It is common for such centers to accept DET at the same time as TOEFL and IELTS. In this article we have prepared some tables of equivalence between DET and TOEFL, IELTS and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scores.

Duolingo vs TOEFL and IELTS Scores
The DET, like the TOEFL and IELTS, is an English language validation test that assesses the 4 English language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. They have different ways of doing so, but they all issue a verdict that is accepted by some academic centers and/or others. It is not the purpose of this article to determine which is more accurate. However, we would like to take this opportunity to remind the candidate that although the 3 exams validate all levels (low, intermediate and high), the same center does not always ask for the same level of demand depending on the exam. That is to say, we know of cases in which the same university requested advanced section of DET while requesting high intermediate TOEFL. That is why you should always check what grade you are asked for all the exams they accept, especially if you are struggling to make the grade.

How do the Common Framework of Reference for Languages grades work?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the official European standard for describing the degree of proficiency in the use of a language. In this scale, the following brackets are established:
- A1 Basic level. This category includes people who have the ability to manage in the language in very elementary situations.
- A2 It is a higher grade than A1. At this level, the candidate is able to hold conversations on everyday topics with an interlocutor using a very basic register.
- B1 Intermediate levels begin. Here one is already able to formulate and express concepts in a more elaborate way. The candidate is also able to express himself/herself in writing with certain guarantees.
- B2 The candidate already knows how to defend and structure his/her ideas correctly, both spoken and written. Basic errors are no longer made and several registers are available depending on the speaker.
- C1 The student demonstrates a significant command of the language. Has a sufficient level to receive higher education in the language.
- C2 This is the highest level of language use. Sufficient resources are available to communicate in any context, ironies are perceived and the candidate even has a higher level than non-trained native speakers can show.
