The SAT in Barcelona: why take it
Every year, students in Barcelona use the SAT as a key to universities in the United States — where it is the standard admissions exam, both for academic applications and for NCAA athletic scholarships, which grow more academically demanding every year — and, increasingly, to top European universities.
Because the SAT is no longer just "the American exam". In Barcelona itself, ESADE accepts it as part of its admissions process; and that same score lets you apply to universities in the United States and to European institutions that accept it from international candidates, such as UCL and King's College London in the UK or Bocconi in Italy. For a family in Barcelona with a child who wants to study abroad — or on an international degree taught in English without leaving the city — few tests open as many doors with a single result.
Why prepare for the SAT in Barcelona with a specialist academy?
A student in Barcelona taking the SAT isn't competing against their classmates: they're competing against applicants from all over the world, many of them native English speakers with years of specific preparation behind them. Whether they come from the Spanish Bachillerato, the IB, an American high school or A-Levels, their education gives them a solid academic foundation — but none of those systems is built for the logic, the pacing and the traps particular to this exam. The advantage is clear: the SAT score is one of the few parts of an application you can actively improve, with a defined plan and concrete deadlines.
That is the difference between preparing on your own — or with a generalist teacher, without high-level practice software and without the experience that only years devoted to this exam can give — and doing it with a specialist team that since 2010 has taken thousands of students to their target score: that difference shows up directly in the result.
EPIC Prep Barcelona is an academy specializing in the SAT. Every preparation begins by understanding the student: starting level, target score and exam date. From there we design a tailored program with expert tutors, exclusive materials and the EPIC Prep Methodology.

Frequently asked questions about the SAT course in Barcelona
These are the questions families in Barcelona ask us most often before getting started: where the exams are held, what course formats are available, when is the best time to start, and what materials the student will be working with. If your question isn’t listed here, please write to us and we’ll be happy to answer it.
Where is the SAT administered in Barcelona?
The SAT is administered in Barcelona at test centers authorized by the College Board, typically located at international schools in the city. Test dates follow the College Board’s international schedule, with test dates available in March, May, June, August, September, October, November, and December. Spots fill up quickly, especially for the March, May, and October test dates, so it’s best to register as soon as registration opens. You can find more details in our SAT Barcelona Guide.
Which universities in Barcelona accept the SAT?
In Barcelona, ESADE accepts the SAT for its eligible programs. In addition, that same score opens the doors to universities in the United States, as well as University College London, King’s College London, and the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom, and Bocconi University in Italy—a popular destination for students from Barcelona, where competitive applicants typically score between 1350 and 1500. Each university updates its requirements every admissions cycle, so always check their official website.
Do you work with students from schools in Barcelona?
With students from all over the city, regardless of their school or educational system. We prepare students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program (such as the American School of Barcelona, Benjamin Franklin International School, Agora International School, or the British School of Barcelona), those following the British curriculum and A-Levels (such as the British School of Barcelona), the French system and its Baccalauréat (Lycée Français de Barcelone), the German Abitur (Deutsche Schule Barcelona), and the Spanish Bachillerato (such as Betania Patmos, Aula, Jesuïtes de Sant Ignasi, or Casp). Each student’s starting point is different: the initial assessment is what defines the plan, not the student’s previous school.
Does the Spanish Bachillerato adequately prepare students for the SAT?
The Spanish high school curriculum provides a solid foundation in content, but it does not prepare students for the specific demands of the SAT: the test presents algebra and geometry in deliberately unfamiliar ways, requiring multi-step reasoning and under time pressure. Furthermore, the Spanish system rewards lengthy, essay-style answers, while the SAT rewards quick and accurate pattern recognition. That shift in focus is one of the first things we work on during preparation.
Do you prepare athletes who are seeking scholarships in the United States?
Yes. Barcelona and its surrounding area are home to some of Europe’s top high-performance sports institutions—such as the FC Barcelona Academy, the CAR in Sant Cugat, and the Emilio Sánchez Academy for tennis—and we have extensive experience preparing student-athletes who are seeking scholarships at universities in the United States. The preparation is structured around the athlete’s actual schedule: longer, less frequent sessions, and the flexibility to reschedule during competition periods—something athletes particularly value. Between sessions, independent practice with Boost Your Prep allows students to continue making progress without relying on a fixed schedule, and for that very reason, the blended learning model—which combines classes with independent study—is one of the most popular options among athletes. The goal is to meet the NCAA’s academic eligibility requirements.
Do you only prepare students for the SAT, or do you also prepare them for other exams?
In addition to the SAT, at EPIC Prep we offer support for the IB and other international exams—a common practice among students in Barcelona who balance SAT preparation with their IB coursework. The initial assessment determines what you need and how to fit it into your schedule.
What SAT score do I need, depending on the college?
It depends on the type of university. The most selective universities in the United States—the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, NYU, and Georgetown—typically admit students with scores between 1500 and 1580. One tier below, strong private universities such as Boston University, Tulane, or the University of Miami range from 1,300 to 1,450. In Europe, Bocconi typically places its competitive applicants between 1,350 and 1,500. Each university reviews its requirements for each admissions cycle, so always check the current figures on its official website.
