Structure of the Social Studies Examination

The GED social studies test consists of 35 questions for which you have 70 minutes to answer. To take the GED social studies test, you will need to apply concepts from the social science field such as interpreting graphs, diagrams, and maps, as well as analyzing data and reports. To take this exam, you will not have to memorize concepts, but be able to answer questions and present conclusions in the field of social sciences.

The contents tested in the GED test are distributed according to the following weights:

  • U.S. society and government: 50% of the content of the exam deals with different levels of American institutions, the American electoral system, the role of the citizen in the U.S., current and past administration of the American government, …
  • U.S. History: 20% of the content is about American history. Topics such as colonialism, the American revolution, the civil war, the modern era, the 2 world wars, the cold war, civil rights, the aerospace race, …
  • Economics: 15% of the syllabus deals with topics such as economic concepts and systems, the role of government in the economy, labor and consumer problems, …
  • Geography and the World: The remaining 15% of the content tests concepts related to world geography. Topics such as the major scenarios of world history, as well as the relationship between the world’s resources, the environment, and society are part of the GED social science test syllabus.

Types of GED Social Studies Test Questions

Although most of the questions you will encounter on the GED social studies test are multiple-choice questions, there are 4 types of possible questions:
  • Multiple choice questions: questions in which you will have to choose between 4 options. Remember that incorrect answers do not penalize your grade on the social studies exam.
  • Fill in the gaps: in this type of question you must fill in the gap provided with a word/phrase or a number.
  • Hot zones: In front of a graph you must click on those areas that represent the answer you want to give
  • Drag and drop: It consists of moving specific information to an area that needs to be completed.

Math Problems on the GED Social Studies Test

One of the things that surprises the GED candidate the most is when he discovers that a calculator appears on the screen on the social studies test. Many of the studies carried out in the field of social sciences use statistical concepts. That’s why you can be asked questions on the GED social studies test that require you to use math concepts to solve.

What Grade Do You Pass the GED Social Studies Test?

The GED social studies test is passed with a score of 145 points. If you read content in English about it, you may see that some websites mark the pass mark at 150 points. This is because in the state of New Jersey they ask for 150 points to pass. In Spain, don’t worry, this exam is passed with 145 points.

How to Prepare for the GED Social Studies Test?

The social science GED test tests a fairly broad content. Remember that it is not about memorizing dates, names of cities, events, … but to master some concepts that will guarantee you a correct resolution of the exam. Your preparation should focus on improving your skills to summarize and present ideas, establish cause-effect relationships and apply basic concepts of mathematics/statistics that allow you to draw conclusions from studies to which you will be exposed.
