Understanding GED scores.

The GED diploma consists of 4 exams. Each of the tests is evaluated individually and all of them must be passed in order to have a GED degree. In this article, we explain how GED tests are scored and when your scores will be available.

Table of Contents

Pass the GED

In the GED, a passing test is given with a score of 145 points. This is a world standard. On some websites, they point out that in the state of New Jersey you need a score of 150 minimum points to pass each exam. If you take the GED in Spain you need 145 points to pass. The GED candidate who wants to study at university in the U.S. should know that the GED, in addition to having a pass or fail section, has 2 additional score levels:

GED College Ready

The grade bracket known as College Ready is between 165 and 174 points. A GED College Ready grade means that the candidate is ready to start college courses, so it will allow them to access college credit without having to take previous access courses.

GED College Ready + Credit

The range of notes between 175 and 200 points is known as GED College Ready + Credit. A GED College Ready+Credit score determines that the candidate has knowledge that is taught in higher courses, so they could be eligible for college credit. Depending on the college to which you apply, a GED College Ready + Credit score may involve:
  • 3 credits in a math subject
  • 3 credits in a social studies subject
  • 3 credits in a science subject
  • 1 credit in a humanities subject
For the GED College Ready and GED College Ready + Credit grade sections, the candidate must send a transcript of their grades to the university to which they want to apply. The admissions offices of each university will be in charge of validating whether or not the university will accept the credits you request for your GED scores. If your GED score exceeds 165 points, contact the admissions office and they will tell you the steps to follow.

Publication of GED Notes

The posting deadline for GED scores is 24 hours. However, it is very common that a few hours after completing one of the tests you have the result of your GED test. To find out if you have the result available you can check your email or log in to your GED account.
